چکیده

Iterat ive decoding is a widely used technique in modern communications systems. The Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes of Gallager were the earliest codes for which iterat ive decoding techniques were dēned. These codes along with a simple iterat ive decoding algorithm were int roduced in the r̄st part of this art icle. Here we describe a probabilist ic iterat ive decoding scheme, also proposed by Gallager, and show how many modern iterative decoding algorithms are derived from his basic scheme.

1962 Gallager invents low density parity-check LDPC codes 1112 and what is now known as the sum-product iterative decoding algorithm for a p osteriori probability APP decoding. 1981 Tanner founds the eld of codes on graphs, introducing the bipartite graphical model now widely popular referred to as a Tanner graph" and the decoding algorithm now called the min-sum" or max-product" algorithm. Tradeoff between decoding complexity and rate for codes on graphs

We consider transmission over a general memoryless channel, with bounded decoding complexity per bit under message passing decoding. We show that the achievable rate is bounded below capacity if there is a finite success in the decoding in a specified number of operations per bit at the decoder for some codes on graphs. These codes include LDPC and LDGM codes. Good performance with low decoding...

A Lower Bound for a Class of Graph Based Loss-resilient Codes Work of Both Authors Has Been Supported by Grant 21-49626.96 from Schweizer Nation- Alfonds (snf)

Recently, Luby et al. constructed information-theoretically almost optimal loss-resilient codes. The construction is based on a sequence of bipartite graphs. Using a probabilistic construction for the individual bipartite graphs, they obtain loss-resilient codes that have very eecient encoding and decoding algorithms. They left open the question whether there are other bipartite graphs leading ...

Acyclic Tanner Graphs and Maximum-Likelihood Decoding of Linear Block Codes

The maximum-likelihood decoding of linear block codes by the Wagner rule decoding is discussed. In this approach, the Wagner rule decoding which has been primarily applied to single parity check codes is employed on acyclic Tanner graphs. Accordingly, a coset decoding equipped with the Wagner rule decoding is applied to the decoding of a code C having a Tanner graph with cycles. A subcode C1 of...

Codes and Iterative Decoding on Algebraic Expander Graphs

The notion of graph expansion was introduced as a tool in coding theory by Sipser and Spielman, who used it to bound the minimum distance of a class of low-density codes, as well as the performance of various iterative decoding algorithms for these codes. In spite of its usefulness in establishing theoretical bounds on iterative decoding, graph expansion has not been widely used to design codes...
